Mk3 Capri (1977-1986)

The first concept of the Mk3 capri was shown at the Geneva Motor show in 1976. Although this concept was a heavily uprated mk2 it featured quad headlight and a black slatted grill, very similar to the Escort RS2000 of that time.

The first Mk3's were available to buy from 1978 and of course featured the now trademark quad headlights first seen in 1976. The Mk3 had improved aerodynamics which inturn resulted in improved economy over the Mk2 examples. A rear spoiler was also added.

The original Mk3's had the same power units the Mark2 capri's however in 1981 Ford dropped the 2.0litre and 3.0l V6's and replaced them with the 2.8 injection. This was the first regular capri to feature fuel injection since the Mk1 RS2600.

1984 saw further improvements to the 2.8 model which was called the 2.8 injection special. This had half leather interior and had a limited slip differential. Externally the car could be distiguished with the 7 spoke RS Alloy wheels however had different centre caps as this was not an "RS" model.

When the final Capri rolled of the production line in December 1986 it marked the end of a production of 1,886,647 capri's. More than a million of these were the mk1's as these had been exported ourside Europe to North America and Australia whilst the Mk2 and Mk3 models were only exported in smaller quanities.
